I would drag in some green and orange chairs, put curtains over the glass doors and draw a scenic landscape on the white board so it's like I'm looking outside. Building the Future: University of Georgia, Athens. While the survey numbers definitely tell a story about the direction of reference in academic libraries, one can look to recent library construction projects to get a sense of where the future is headed. At the University of Georgia (UGA), an ARL member with a large undergraduate program, the new Student Learning Center, a joint project of the university libraries and the Academic Computing department, is a perfect example. "In designing this facility, we anticipated that the typical undergraduate could complete many projects, speeches, and short papers from online resources," says William Potter, director of the UGA libraries. University Librarian Bill Potter remarks that the Student Learning Center's innovative combination of classroom and study space "will give the building a sense of life, activity".
